Year-end Pt. 1: Frustration for Catalogers
Postal reform is definitely a good thing, and maybe a little more wouldn’t hurt. We are hearing from clients that the last two drops of the year were below plan. For example, a Chicago catalog and e-commerce marketing manager wrote us in mid-January:
Thought you would find it interesting that I received eleven 2006 holiday catalogs in the mail on Jan 17th. I contacted our post office to inquire about the late deliveries and was informed that they were “bombarded” with mail towards the end of 2006 and are still working to get all the mail out. We have received our other types of mail in a timely fashion, so I believe only catalog delivery was delayed.
The below retailers’ catalogs had in-home dates of 11/24–12/7 listed on the back of their catalogs but [they] arrived 1/18/07. Many had offers that expired 12/24/06:
J. Crew
Pottery Barn Kids
West Elm
White House / Black Market
Restoration Hardware
Harry & David
Hanna Anderson
Solutions
Sur La Table
Wine Country Gift Baskets
I contacted the above retailers to let them know that their marketing efforts arrived too late and I also emailed the DMA’s president. I have received some of these retailers’ 2007 catalogs already so obviously the post office put the above 2006 catalogs to the side and are just starting to deliver them.
Extremely frustrating!
